Context: exhib. label:Two Old Men Beside a Sled Bearing the Coats of Arms of Amsterdam and Utrecht1620/1625Pen and black and brown ink, with brush and brown wash and watercolor over black chalk on paperClarence Buckingham CollectionHendrick Avercamp was a deaf-mute with keen powers of observation and a warm snse of humor. This scene, possibly depicting the post sleigh between Utrecht and Amsterdam, is one of his best drawings. It is characteristic of the Dutch genre of pleasures on the ice, which originated during the severe cold weather that occurred in the Netherlands in the early 17th century.
