Context: Harps with carved heads were made throughout northeastern Zaire. They are strikingly similar to those of ancient Egypt dating to the fifteenth dynasty (about 1600 BC). Here the Mangbetu tradition of binding and elongating the head for beautification has been rendered in a stylized way. The synthesis of the arts of sculpture and music in this harp relfects the widespread use of multiple media in Africa to create aesthetic experiences that appeal to several senses simultaneously.
