Context: Tapestries were not woven in Italy until the 15th century, when weavers from Flanders and France came to Mantua and Ferrara. This tapestry was designed by Cosimo Tura, a painter, sculptor, and designer of decorative arts for the Este Court of Ferrara. Violent emotion and stiffness of figures characterize Tura's style, probably a result of his close contact with Flemish and German artists working in Ferrara at that time.
