Context: The Bible recounts the story of the Feast of Herod in the New Testament. Urged by her vengeful mother Herodias, the young Salome requests the head of Saint John the Baptist on a platter from her stepfather, King Herod. Pleased with her dancing at his banquet, Herod rashly grants Salome her wish.Since few compositional drawings from late in Rubens's career survive, this work is especially important for what it indicates about his working method. Its schematic use of line reveals a side of the artist that is rarely seen. It truly shows him thinking on paper. The written notations on the sheet refer to changes Rubens wished to make in the composition.
