Context: A mythmaker and entrepreneur whose images of the West made him rich and famous, Frederic Remington's art perpetuated popular, romanticized late-nineteenth-century notions regarding the Native Americans, cavalry soldiers, and cowboys who inhabited the American West. Native Americans are unseen in The Advance-Guard, but the violence of their presence is clear in the image. Remington's delineation of the treacherous landscape serves as a surrogate for the Native Americans, who hide within it, throwing the heroism of the cavalry into sharp relief. The title of the work also emphasizes the protagonist as a martyr who has sacrificed his life in the service of westward expansion.
