Context: Segantini painted this picture in Maloja in the Swiss Alps, where he lived from 1886 to 1899. The composition is a study for an unrealized painting of Adam and Eve in the Terrestrial Paradise. Segantini's distinctive technique is characterized by brilliant colors applied in small strokes to create an unusually vibrant surface. Segantini may have intended the bent, twisted tree that struggles for survival against alpine storms as a metaphor for human perseverance. As the artist wrote, "The alpine roses speak of eternal love, eternal hope is the answer of the evergreen pine trees. . . . Living water splashes from the living rock, both symbols of eternity." Born in Italy, Segantini spent most of his life associating with Symbolist artists and writers in Switzerland.
