Subject Description: Onoe Matsusuke I, dressed in a simple striped kimono and long black haori jacket, stands examining a 'record book of costumes issued' (isho watashi-cho). This bears the name Yamadaya, suggesting that it is a record of costumes rented from that company. The figure holding the record book wears a blue cotton kimono dyed with the Ichikawa family crest and the name Kikumaru; on his feet are black tabi socks, such as would normally be worn backstage. He may be either an employee of the Yamadaya company whosejob was to look after the costumes, or else a minor actor (Ichikawa Kikumaru?) performing the same function for the theater. He carries a bundle wrapped in a yellow cloth, presumably to be delivered somewhere, since the boy assistant is holding a pair ofsandals for street wear. Shunsho draws an amusing contrast between the good-looking actor with his strong, regular features and the snub-nosed, weak-chinned costume assistant.Through the doorway at the back can be seen a large chest marked 'costume box' (isho ire), on top of which is piled a persimmon-colored costume with an emblem of arrow shafts, such as might be used in a 'Shibaraku' scene. Pasted on the sliding door is a list of regulations from the theater manager, and in the alcove are stored a variety of small stage props: various types of letters, a small sword and an amulet in brocade bags, and a rolled scroll. On top of the small chest is a pair of wooden stage clappers (hyoshigi), used for sound effects such as running feet and clashing swords. (The Actor's Image, 1994)
