Context: A painter in his studio is busy at work on a small canvas depicting a nymph and satyr, probably Jupiter and Antiope. The painter wears 18th-century dress, indicating that at the time of its creation in 1855, this picture was already a charming historical fiction. It was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1857.
