Context: REcalling his experiences as a soldier in WOrld War I, Fernand Léger wrote: "During those four years I was abruptly thrustinto a reality which was both blinding and new....Suddenly , and without any break, I found myself on a level with the whole of the French People; my new companions in the Engineer Corps were miners, navvies, workers in metal and wood." Thus, after years of painting abstract works influenced by Cubism, Léger decided to enthusiastically embrace the beauty of modern machinery and technology. From this point on, he dedicated his life to creating art for every class of society. He developed his own Cubist style of precise, logical forms that proclaim his optimistic faith in progress. This painting celebrates the courage of aviators, using fragmented violet, black, yellow, and green shapes to suggest the energetic movement of a whirling propellor.
