Context: This elaborate Crucifixion ranks as one of the most ambitious Canon illustrations that survive from the North Netherlands. Such miniatures were traditionally quite simple, with the dead Christ flanked only by the Virgin and St. John. Here, however, in an unusually deep landscape, a large number of people have gathered below the cross: the three Marys have joined the Virgin and John on the left, and the area on the right is crowded with men on horseback, including one with a scroll containing the words, "Truly this man was the son of God."
