Subject Description: In a scene reminiscent of the Momoyama Period screen compositions by Isen'in's ancestor Kano Eitoku, the detail of one scroll shown here depicts a great pine tree and two cranes. The blue and green coloring of the earthforms symbolizes the sacred groundof a Daoist paradise, and is a convention that can be traced to pre-Tang painting. Here again both the subject and the technique derive from Chinese painting. The combination of sleek execution and richly decorative style is, however, completely Japanese. (S.Little, 1999)
