Inscriptions: SIGNATURE Ippitsusai Buncho gaARTIST'S SEAL Mori ujiThe hand-written inscription added to the top left-hand corner of the print identifies the subject as Kikuchi Hyogo, played by Matsumoto Koshiro III (later Ichikawa Danjuro V) at the Nakamura Theater inthe autumn of Meiwa 7 (I770).

Subject Description: Kabuki Nempyo describes Koshiro III appearing on this occasion in the guise of an old, white-haired man. He stands resolutely beside a stone lantern at the approach to a shrine, his sword drawn and an open umbrella over one shoulder. The costume consistsof a long black haori jacket over a lime green kimono decorated with purple panels bearing the actor's crest (mon). (Actor's Image, 1994)
