Subject Description: The courtesan Handayu of the Nakaomiya house stands by the entrance of the establishment, lost in thought. She wears a pure white kimono, bright red under-robes, and a purple obi, and has pulled her hands up inside her kimono and holds them under her chin. At her feet is a large folding lantern bearing the circular dwarf bamboo (nezasa) emblem of the house, along with a design of a red peony which must be her personal crest. She has probably been engaged to entertain at a party and is waiting for a maid or manservant to come and accompany her, for no high-ranking courtesan would venture out unescorted, to say nothing of carrying her own lantern. Beside the staircase leading up to the second-floor apartments of the women is an elaborate planter containingdwarf pine and chrysanthemums, indicating that the season is autumn.
