Context:

With the rise of international exhibitions of art and industry beginning witht eh London's Crystal Palaace in 1851, important pieces of furniture started to be made for the first time with no particular client in mind. Rather, pieces were made withan eye to garner awards for the maker based on their technical and artistic merit. This Anglo-Etruscan center table is just such a piece, having been made by the distinguished London cabinet-making firm of Jackson and Graham from designs by the Parisisn designer, Alexander Eugene Prignot, for display at the London International Exhibition of 1872. Here, Jackson and Graham exhibits the highest quality crafatsmanship as well as the most current artistic styles.
