Context: The Tyekpa women's society, the couterpart of the men's Pondo society, commissioned this dramatic sculpture for public display. Its bold monumentality created an impressive image when carried balanced on the heads of society members during funeral performances. The swelling volumes of the body and the stark angularitiy of the facial expression contrast with the mother's nurturing act to effectively symbolize the power, independence, and social roles of women.
