Context: Although in many ways an abstract painter, Milton Avery remained committed to depicting the world around him. The coastal landscape of Cape Cod, where he spent several summers, inspired many of his most felicitous compositions. By omitting distracting detail, he could simplify and reduce the forms and interlock open passages of color. In 1957, Avery spent the first of four summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the end of Cape Cod. His wife, Sally, felt that this landscape - with its dramatic and beautiful confrontation of sand and sea - most stimulated his creativity. These Provincetown views of beach, water, and sky prompted Avery's largest scale and most refined handling of color and form, as in Dunes and Sea II. In such late works abstract values - bold, infused color and stark spatial juxtapositions - predominate. Dunes and Sea II was one of the increasingly abstract images that earned the respect of Mark Rothko, Avery's colleague and sensational style to that of the New York School abstractionists and Color Field painters. Working in his usual manner, Avery produced a half-scale gouache-on-paper study before painting Dunes and Sea II. In this study, made during his final summer in Provincetown, the sky and border between sand and sea are blue, not the gray and green they became in the final version, painted in his New York studio-apartment. Both works nevertheless show the same economy of means - a rough sea, set forth in strokes of black and blue, the dune's edge, reduced to a serpentine band, and the san simplified into two muted tonalities. The Whitney Museum painting is the second of two Provincetown canvases, bearing the same title, but otherwise unconnected.
