Context:

The refined porcelain wares produced in Korea during the Chos???Âșn period reflect the austere tastes of upper-class society-families whose values were deeply imbedded in Confucianism. White porcelains were initially produced at government-sanctioned kilns where artisans developed decorative techniques, including underglaze painting in cobalt blue, iron-brown, and the difficult copper-reds. The bamboo and plum blossoms motifs on this wine flask reflect a natural verve and simplicity of composition that are hallmarks of this era in Korean art. The beautiful brownish, crescent-shaped area on the lower portion of the flask was created naturally and by accident: over time, oily wine residues seeped through and colored the porcelain, enhancing the vessel's visual presence.
