Provenance: House of Brunswick-Lüneburg; (Goldschmidt Galleries, New York).
Context: This is the earliest object from the Guelph Treasure, the ecclesiastical treasure of the Cathedral of Braunschweig, in Germany. Other objects from this treasure may be seen in the museum's Rotunda. The medallion may have originally been worn by a priest as a brooch. It represents the figure of Christ between the Greek letters alpha and omega, indicating the beginning and the end of life.
