Context: This is one of a large series of swords carried by the state guard of Duke Julius of Brunswick and Lüneburg. They are distinguished by their quillions filed in the shape of fish and their pierced crutch-shaped pommels. Each sword in this series is dated and numbered. On the ricasso--that portion of the blade between the hilt and the beginning of the edge--is the etched crowned monogram of Duke Julius with the date 1574 and N 59, the number of this particular sword. Two-handed swords, originally a weapon of war for specialist infantry, are so-named because the weapon required two hands to wield it. By the late 1600s these enormous swords assumed a largely ceremonial or bodyguard function, as was the case here. The weight of the sword is only 8-1/2 pounds and is well-balanced for easy use.
