Context:

The ancient empire of Assyria, along the Tigris River, alternately fought and allied itself with its neighbors in Babylon, Urartu, and Luristan. Assyria's gods, however, such as the winged genie pollinating the date palm, came mostly from the Babylonian religion. In the Judeo-Christian Bible, the Assyrians are pictured as wanton oppressors; and the cuneiform inscription on this relief from the palace of Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud down not dispute that image. It says that large numbers of prisoner-slaves were made to lay the foundation and build this vast palace from huge blocks of stone and to trim it with all types of wood--from cedar to ebony to yew. Originally this relief was brightly painted.
