Context: These sculptures were originally placed atop hour-glass shaped vessels that probably contained incense or offerings. Made as a pair, the figures portray a young Maya prince or ruler, and his supernatural patron. The ruler wears a kilt, jade jewelry, and an elaborate headdress. He once held in one hand a brush or stylus, poised over plant fronds draped across his other hand.The second figure's grotesque face, oval body markings, and serpent-shaped tail identify him as a supernatural. In contrast to the ruler's calm expression and upright pose, the deity crouches avidly over a small mask or head. He, too, held a brush or implement, in a gesture echoing that of the young ruler. The head scrutinized by the deity has a projecting forelock similar to that of the ruler. In turn, the young man's headdress resembles the god's face. These features suggest a special relationship between Maya royalty and the gods.
