Inscriptions: Dated inscription (corresponding to 632) engraved on front of base and extending to its right side:translation"This (image) is the pious gift of the Buddhist nun named Parisuddhamati in the village Ladita. Whatever merit accrues from this (gift) may it lead to the supreme enlightenment of all living beings. (This gift was made) in the year 313 (300.10.3). (It is the wish) that (a certain ascetic) Purnnaka belonging to the monastery in the locality of Chaityakuta should be fed."

Context: While metal sculpture of the Gupta period is rare, what makes this bronze even more unusual is its dated inscription. Information provided by the lengthy inscription engraved on the base suggests that the sculpture was inscribed in ancient Patan (Kathmandu) in Nepal. Thus it was either produced in Nepal or, if made in India, carried to Nepal and inscribed there. If the former is the case, historians could conclude that the early Licchavi style in Nepal (examples of which barely survive) was practically identical to the Sarnath style of Gupta India. The transparent garments of the Buddha, the modeling of his body, and his stance closely reflect the Sarnath style. The facial features, however, are more fleshy than classical Sarnath and may suggest that ifindeed the piece was cast in India, Sarnath proper may not have been where it was made. The most likely solution is that it is a product of one of the local ateliers under strong Sarnath influence. S.C.
