Provenance: Camille Barrère, Rome, by descent [1924-?]; by descent to Albert Cousin; (J. Seligmann, New York).
Context: God the father is seated on a throne, wearing the triple papal tiara. He represents Christ crucified on the cross, surrounded by angels and cherubim. A dove representing the Holy Spirit flutters in the center. Known as the Throne of Grace, images of this type stress God's sacrifice for the salvation of humankind. The panel may have formed the central section of a large altarpiece.
