Context: Guro concepts of beauty are clearly evident in this vi mask: bulging forehead and slit eyes; smooth and textured surfaces; serrated borders that separate parts; and sensitive transitions in convex and concave contours. The mask is part of the Dye ensemble, a group of about a dozen animal masks regarded as powerful spiritual beings that perform only for special occasions, such as the funeral of an honored family member.
