Inscriptions: Artist's inscription, signature, and 3 seals, at end of scroll:In the autumn of the eleventh year of Cheng-te [1516], in the seventh month, I was idling under the window, and suddenly there came to my mind all the appearances and manners of the beggars and other street characters whom I often saw in the streets and markets. With brush and ink ready at hand, I put them into pictures in an impromptu way. It may not be worthy of serious enjoyment, but it certainly can be considered as a warning and admonition to the world.Recorded by Tung-ts'un. Chou Ch'en. [seals] Tung-ts'un; Shun-ch'ing; O-ch'ang san-jen.Title on frontispiece by Chao Hou-ch'in (20th c.)3 colophons and 10 addtional seals: 1 colophon, dated 1564, and 2 seals of Huang Chi'shui (1509-1574); 1 colophon and 3 seals of Chang Feng-i (1527-1613); 1 colophon, dated 1577, and 1 seal of Wen Chia (1501-1583); 4 seals unidentified.
