Context:

Peter Voulkos started out as a functional potter in the early 1950s when he made the stoneware teapot exhibited in this gallery while working at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. Not content to continue down this more traditional path, Voulkos started to challenge the medium by literally torturing the surface of his ceramics, at the same time as the abstract expressionists were taking similar liberties with paint on canvas. Voulkos' kinship with these painters is clearly reflected in the plate exhibited here, as well as in the lidded jar by his contemporary Jim Leedy. Voulkos' innovative work in ceramics has served as a liberating force for ceramists ever since.
