Context: From 1908 to 1912, a phase known as "analytic" Cubism, Pablo Picasso fragmented objects into increasingly smaller geometric shapes. By 1911, his compositions came daringly close to total abstraction. The objects in this painting are difficult to discren, but include a wine glass, a corked bottle, a folded newspaper, and a knife set on a table. In the lower center, the knob of a drawer protrudes from the table. Never an advocate of complete abstraction, PIcasso included fragmentary words and numberes that connected his subjects to the realities of daily life. The "fe 20" in the upper left of this painting may refer to Cafe 20, the name or address of a favorite café. The "EAN" above "[P] ARIS" in the upper right probably alludes to the radical Parisian newspaper, L'Infransigeant. Combined with the wine glasses and newspapers, the fragmented words suggest associations with the artist's life.
