Publication Note: Desilver issued an earlier 1858 edition which differs from this edition only in the North and South Carolina maps - Cushings and Bailey used the new North and South Carolina Maps by J. Hazzard that also appear in their 1859 edition. Otherwise, the atlases are so similar that we presume that Desilver printed and colored the maps and sent them to Cushings an Bailey who put their own imprint on the title page. As far as we can determine, Cushings and Bailey issued the only 1859 edition and they are the only one listed by Phillips for that year. Full color. This copy is bound in half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas. E. Tileston Mudge." and an elaborate border stamped in gold on the front and "Universal Atlas. Mitchell." on spine.
