A new map of the state of Arkansas, constructed principally from the United States surveys exhibiting the counties, townships & sections by H.S. Tanner. Published by H.S. tanner, Philadelphia. Entered according to Act of Congress in ... 1839, by H.S. Tanner in ... Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
List No

Note
An extremely rare map of Arkansas and the earliest large format map of the state, published less than 3 years after its admission to the Union on June 15, 1836. Tanner's map depicts the new state divided by the Survey of Public Lands into the "Lawrence," "Arkansas," "Fayetteville," and "Red River" Districts and further subdivided into its 30 original counties. The familiar grid of townships and sections imposed by the Survey of Public Lands dominates the map—this closely matches a Map of Arkansas Surveying District published by the General Land Office later in 1839 and is evidence that Tanner used the most up-to-date sources. Overall, Arkansas settlement was strikingly sparse at this early date, with the total population still under 100,000 and heavily concentrated in the eastern counties. Of particular interest are Miller and Lafayette Counties in the far southwest, at the time the subject of a territorial dispute with the then-independent Republic of Texas. Here they are assigned a somewhat ambiguous status, depicted within Arkansas' borders but not included in the Arkansas Survey District. All of Miller was ceded to Texas when it became a state in 1845, but the county was later reconstituted from the western portion of Lafayette County. Hand colored map. Includes notes and legend. Shows state, county, township, and district boundaries, railroads and roads,Trails, canals, rivers, and topographical features such as prairies and swamps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Washington.

The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine.

2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States."
