"Early and highly important map of the English Colonies in North America, which includes the earliest printed plan of New York Harbor. Thornton, Morden & Lea's map is the first obtainable state of the finest general map of England’s American colonies to date. The map is one of the earliest to include Augustine Herrman’s cartography for Virginia and Maryland. To the North it includes one of the earliest depictions of the Pennsylvania colony (est. 1681), the first printed chart of New York Harbor, and significant additions to the cartography of New England. The map shows the English colonies from Cape Ann in Massachusetts to Cape Henry at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. The map extends as far north as the tributaries of the Hudson, and in the southwest it shows the Delaware and Susquehannah Rivers and as far west as the tributaries of the Potomac and Rapahannock. Augustyn and Cohen note the importance of the inset:: 'To the ambitious person, the map would have presented an enticing vista: it displays a loose federation of colonies, between and beyond which there appears to be ample unclaimed land. It creates an image of an area comfortingly linked by civilization but still containing much open territory.'The geography of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey derives from the Thornton-Greene Mapp of Virginia Mary-land, New Jarsey, New-York, & New England (ca 1678), whose depiction of the region is in turn based largely on Augustine Herrman’s Virginia and Maryland (1673). The Thornton-Morden-Lea departs from these prototypes, however, in showing the new colony of Pennsylvania and incorporating changes to the course of the Delaware and place names along its banks. New York and southern New England are drawn from the Thornton-Greene map, which in turn draws on John Seller’s Mapp of New England (1676). Here as well, Thornton, Morden and Lea, have departed substantially from the prototypes: Long Island’s barrier beaches are shown for the first time on a printed map and numerous place names are introduced along the Connecticut coast and on Cape Cod; the boundaries between Massachusetts, Plymouth and Connecticut colonies are drawn; and several roads are shown. " (Ruderman)

Wheat & Brun: "This is the best map of Pennsylvania to appear in the 18th century, and the first detailed map of the State to show its exact boundaries." This copy is a mixed state, as is usually the case, with the title and dedication in the first state. It is fully colored by county by a contemporary hand. Wheat & Brun list the first four states as 1792, with states V and VI as 1795, state VII as 1798, and state VIII as 1806. Ristow lists later editions of 1816 and 1817 published by Emmor Kimber in Philadelphia. Howell also published a smaller Map of Pennsylvania, reduced from the large map, in 1792, with later issues in 1795 and 1796; Ristow lists editions of 1811 and 1817. Howell's maps were the first maps of the state published after the revolution, and were used until Melish published his map in 1822. Samuel Lewis used Howell's map as the source for his Pennsylvania map in Carey's American Atlas of 1795. Map is dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into its original brown leather slip case 24x17.5 with "Howell's Map" printed on the front in ink, and then into a new dark green cloth folding case 25x18 with -Pennsylvania R. Howell 1792" stamped on the spine in gold.

Note
A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle; after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle.
