List No 10402.010
Note A rare and important map of California in five different states, ranging from roughly 1656 to 1767. Engraved by the important French cartographer Robert De Vaugondy, for the c. 1770 edition of the Denis Diderot (1713-84) Encyclopedie . This map explores the confused state of California cartography in the late 18th century. Examines the gradual discovery of California through various seminal mappings. Initially uses the work of Italian cartographer Matheau Neron Pecci (1604) which correctly presumed that the main body of California extended southward into a peninsula. The next map illustrated, by N. Sanson in 1656, displays in insular California. Map no. III, by Guillaume de L'Isle (1700) reattaches California to the mainland, returning to the early peninsular theory. Next, Vaugondy exhibits part of the seminal Kino Map. This map, rendered by a Jesuit missionary c. 1705 was the work that finally disproved the California Insular theory. Father Franz Kino walked this region between 1698 and 1701. The final map, produced by unnamed Jesuits c. 1767 is a somewhat accurate depiction of the Baja California peninsula. These maps all predate the discoveries of Captain Cook’s voyages and hence Diderot’s work was as much speculative as historical. A fine example of an essential work for all serious California collections. This map is part of the 10 map series prepared by Vaugondy for the Supplement to Diderot’s Encyclopédie , of which this is plate 5. This seminal map series, exploring the mapping of North American and specifically the Northwest Passage was one of the first studies in comparative cartography.

Note Engraved map in Russian of Northern California and Mexico, Baja California. Shows international and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, rivers and mountains. Relief shown by hachures. Date is estimated based on showing of Pyramid Lake from the Fremont 1845 map. The map appears to have been published in Russia as a separate map, not in any reports we can locate. It shows the Russian settlement at Fort Ross on the California coast. It might have been a map advocating for increased Russian exploration and settlement in California. There is no mention of the gold rush on the map, thus it is likely to have been published before 1849. We have not been able to located any other copies at libraries.

Note Hand colored manuscript map of two heavy slides of earth that obstructed the tracks of the Central Pacific Railway near Alta California. From historical records it appears that the map may detail two slides that occurred along the railroad. The largest slide occurred in the Spring of 1866 during construction of the railroad and is shown in the center of the map with damages and repairs to the various ditches that ran through the area. The April 21, 1866 edition of the Dutch Flat Enquirer mentions "LAND SLIDE.—A huge land slide occurred a few days since near Buckley's ranch, just above this place, on the line of the C. P. Railroad, damaging the ditches of the Dutch Flat Water Company to the amount of several thousand dollars, and rendering a change of the railroad bed necessary, which will also cost an immense sum. Nearly a quarter section, extending along a heavy fill of the railroad several hundred yards, suddenly gave way and moved off in a solid body, taking with it ditches, flumes and everything else that obstructed its course, and making a change from the original survey of the railroad at that point imperative. The material that gave way, it seems, was of a soapy or pipe clay formation, and the pressure from the railroad fill is assigned as the cause." We estimate the map was drawn by Uren in 1880, looking back at that 1866 slide and also showing the recent 1880 slide that blocked the tracks in the upper left part of the map. The 1880 slide was recorded in the Scientific American issue Volume 42, noting that hydraulic mining techniques were used to blast away the debris covering the tracks. The map is unusual in showing illustrations of two Chinese Camps near the railroad line. With decorative compass rose, oriented with the north to upper left margin. Map showing railroad, steam engine, two views of Chinese camps, slide areas and views of Flume and water ditches. Date estimated. Uren writes his name on the map as E.C. Uren while we believe he is Charles Edward Uren.

Full Title A skeleton map of the State of California : exhibiting the U.S. township and range lines and boundaries of U.S. land districts, the county seats and the lines of equal variations of the compass. Compiled from authentic sources for the California Academy of Natural Sciences by Leander Ransom. Lithographed and published by B.F. Butler, San Francisco.
List No 11716.000
Note "The Earliest Commercially Printed Map of California to Show the Baselines and Meridians in California. A remarkable early map of Califiornia, published by Leander Ransom for the California Academy of Natural Sciences and lithographed in San Francisco by B.F. Butler. The map is one of the first maps of the state of California printed in California. We have dated the map at 1853, which is the first year of the Academy. Vodges dates the map as "some time in the fifties." Rowell dates the map as "185-". This is the only map of which we are aware the records the lines of equal variation of the compass, or Magnetic Needle."(Ruderman) Date estimated. Showing county boundaries, townships, and Land Offices. Townships and ranges are numbered. Includes explanation. Leander Ransom was born in Colchester, Connecticut and educated in New York. Came to California in 1851 with Samuel D. King, who was the U. S. Surveyor General for California. They arrived in San Francisco on June 14, 1851. From July 1851 to September 1851, Ransom conducted the first Public Land Survey in California as Deputy Surveyor. The Mount Diablo Principal Meridian and Base Line extending from the Mount Diablo Initial Point, established on July 17, 1851 by Ransom, controls Public Land Surveys within two-thirds of California and all of Nevada. B.F. Butler was one of the earliest lithographers working in San Francisco. Butler was the lithographer for Eddy's map of San Francisco, published in 1851.

Tooley referred to the map as "Perhaps the most attractive and certainly the most definite representation of California as an island. California is the centre and 'raison de'etre' of the map." One of a few maps to focus exclusively on California as an island, first published in Goos' De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Weereld. "With the similar Joannes van Loon chart of the same year, this is one of the most desirable of all California as an island maps. They are the first folio maps devoted to this curious cartographic phenomenon..." (Burden). Reissued in 1668, 1669, 1670, 1675, 1676.

Full Title The United States as viewed by California (Very unofficial), distorted and drawn by Ernest Dudley Chase, Winchester, Mass. Copyright 1940, Ernest Dudley Chase.
List No 10006.000
Note Uncolored pictorial map (as issued, see our hand colored copy, presumably colored by an owner). Showing the United States from the point of view of Californian, with the Sun smiling on a disproportionately large California while the rest of the country is compressed into a largely undifferentiated spiders web beneath dark rain clouds. Throughout the state, California is also depicted as a cornucopia of plenty, teaming with industry, agriculture, recreational activity, wild life and natural wonders. Shows landmarks such as Spanish Colonial missions, the Rose Bowl, the Bakersfield oil wells and the state capital building. An airplane in the sky bearing the slogan well soon be there! approaches the state line along with a train, a bus and cars, while railroad cars carrying California produce head east. Chase created this highly distorted view of the United States as perceived by Californians. One-third the size of the rest of the country, the state is perpetually drenched by the sun. Relief shown pictorially. Signed lower left in pencil: Ernest Dudley Chase.

List No 3463.000
Note Vogdes shows this as the first edition. Vogdes says that the survey was completed in April, 1852, and that the interior topography was taken from Eddy's official map of the city. We have a reproduction of an earlier state of the chart which has no soundings and is dated 1852; it says the plan of the city was taken from the map by Cooke and Le Count; there are differences in the piers and the buildings along the piers. We can find no reference for this earlier state. In the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, another issue of the chart was published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides in the upper left - this same chart was also issued (engraved on thin paper) in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. Map is without color.
