Description in a cartouche in the bottom right of the globe. 1 map : copperplate engraving on 12 sheets, hand colour. Dates estimated. This circular map filled the right half of Blaeu's enormous world map, which was published under the title 'Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula'. Although undated, the dedication to Gaspar de Bracamonte Guzmán, a Spanish representative at the Treaty of Westphalia, probably places the publication sometime around the conclusion of the treaty in 1648. As new information continued to arrive the map was revised multiple times, producing at least four different states. This is an impression of the first, pulled before Blaeu made major revisions to the depiction of China. As published, Blaeu's two maps were framed in a border filled with smaller terrestrial and astrological maps. Judging from the extant copies, the two hemispheres were often extracted from the map and, in this case, presented as separate sheets. In doing so, however, the compilers of the Klencke Atlas reversed the order in which the hemispheres are presented on Blaeu's sheet, presumably to give precedence to Europe. |

Although undated, the dedication to Gaspar de Bracamonte Guzmán, a Spanish representative at the Treaty of Westphalia, probably places the publication sometime around the conclusion of that treaty in 1648. 1 map : copperplate engraving on 6 sheets, hand colour. Method of distance calculation presented in a cartouche in the top right. Small fictive sheet in the bottom left, held above the waves by sea putti, carrying an acknowledgement to Samuel Blommaert for information about the Cabo Blanco and Cabo Negro (Angola). Title in the bottom right, on a cartouche surmounted with a personification of Africa, and flanked by two river gods and various figures in regional dress (North African at the left, Sub-Saharan at the right). Map framed by three descriptions of the continent, in Latin (left), Dutch (bottom) and French (right), each ending with the imprint of Jodocus Hondius. Samuel Blommaert served three terms as director of the Dutch West India Company, and he also oversaw voyages to North America and Africa. His papers proved to be a fruitful source of information about the west coast of Africa, and even after his death in 1651 he continued to be credited by cartographers, particularly for supplying details about the two capes mentioned by Blaeu in his acknowledgement (for a similar posthumous note see Maps K.Top.117.30.). Among the numerous animals depicted in the African interior are two rhinoceros based on Albrecht Dürer's famously misleading woodcut, which for centuries remained the stock image of the animal. |

New Meyer's Zeitungs-Atlas. In 31 deliveries, closely corresponds to Meyer's Zeittungs und Groschen Atlas. With a engraved title page, index, and 123 steel engraving outline hand colored maps dated between 1849-1852. Although all the maps in this atlas are not individually dated, the title page and maps were often updated while the imprint with the date was not, causing confusion to the exact date for some of the maps. Atlas includes 123 maps of old geography, maps of modern geography, and maps of physical geography. Bound in marbled paper covered boards. Map numbering skips around from country to country with no obvious logic, and does not correspond with the index listing all the maps. The maps are of the highest Meyer quality, with detail information, showing political and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, canals, forts, roads, railroads, rivers and mountains. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Ferro, Paris or Greenwich. There are six detailed maps of groups of the United States, including an interesting "Californien, Texas und die Territorien New Mexico u. Utah" of 1852 that shows the gold region in California and has a Texas truncated by an enlarged New Mexico. Maps engraved by J. Zipter, F. Sporer, E. Luther, C. Metzeroth, Joh. David, H. Bornmuller, Gustav Metzeroth, C. Ehricht, Adolf Gottschalck, E. Biedermann, W. Feuerstein, R. v. Rothenberg, H. Schleifmann, Schouw, Joakim Frederik and Jean Adam. See our 4808.000 - the 1854 edition of this atlas, in a somewhat composite form. |

The legend on the left is a sonnet about the map and on the right side another legend in an elaborate frame explaining the shape of the world map and dating the work at 1587. Below the frame is an oval portrait of Monte at the age of 45, which covers another portrait of Monte slightly altered and at age 43. The existence of the top portrait at age 45 would indicate that some alternations of the 1587 work may have been made in 1789. This image shows the portrait age 45. Stanford's London Atlas Of Universal Geography, exhibiting the physical and political divisions of the various countries of the world. Partial folio edition published by Edward Stanford Ltd. Atlas dated 1884 by the maps. The Stanford map making company had been active in London since 1854. In 1874 they acquired the London atlas of 1834 from John Arrowsmith, with 50 maps which had increased to over 65 maps within 30 years. According to Francis Herbert, Stanford released a special limited edition in 1884 with 70 maps - our copy appears to be a partial set of those maps. Of the 70 plates, this portfolio contains 31 loose hand colored maps on 41 sheets in dark green cloth half bound leather portfolio with title stamped in gilt on the front cover. Title from the cover. Maps dated 1841-1884. Consists of sheets: 6-28, 30-32, 35-41, 43, 45,-46, 51-53, 57-58. Including maps of the continents, countries, kingdoms and empires. Showing political and administrative divisions, place names, and geographical features. Many maps printed on 2 or more sheets. Some sheets include 2 maps. On most maps noted: "Stanford’s Geographical Establishment, London." Most maps by J. Arrowsmith. Only two complete sets of the 1884 edition are known to exist, both in the archives of George Philip, who had taken over Stanford's in the mid-twentieth century, now held at the Royal Geographic Society, London. Eventually Stanford updated and added new plates. In 1887 Stanford published the London Atlas of universal geography folio edition with 90 plates. It contained important new maps, including the North Pole, Malta, Cyprus, the approaches to the Black Sea, parts of Canada and Australia. |

Seventeenth century atlas of the World by Nicholas Visscher. With Engraved allegorical title page, on sheet 51x31, printed in full color, followed by letterpress half title page. Consists of 127 engraved maps, hand-colored in outline and full, with elegant title cartouche. Visscher is well-known for the depth of accuracy within his maps, and for embellishing the maps' beauty further with small detailing. This work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. His true innovation lies in his rendering of the New World, where he added small variations to the still widely unknown North American coastlines. About 1690 Visscher retouched the old plate of N.J. Visscher, by adding the city of Philadelphia and the name of the state Pennsylvania. Majority of the maps are published by Visscher with additional maps by several other mapmakers. The Atlas Minor is a fine and comprehensive composite atlas, and one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers in the 17th century. |

7th. edition, 1884 printing of new and improved Sohr-Berghaus Hand atlas of the world. New revision by F. Handtke. Glogau. Published by Carl Flemming, printed in 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1883, 1884, 1886. The 7th. comprehensive edition includes 100 chrome lithographs mostly outline, partially colored or some full colored maps, some double-sheet, includes general maps, maps of European countries, regional maps of other European countries, maps for the other continents; and regional maps for the other continents. Maps are not dated; publication year only on title page; name of cartographer on 14 out of 100 maps, name of engraver on 1 map only. Maps showing seas, bays, ports, rivers, islands, mountains, cities, townships, villages, roads, railroads, telegraph cables, forts, mines, canals etc., including explanation, legend, tables and color coded key to colonies and European possessions. Prime meridians are Ferro, Paris and Greenwich. Relief shown by hachures. Bound into half leather brown covered boards with title “Sohr-Berghaus Hand atlas der neuen Erdbeschreibung in 100 blattern.” stamped on the front cover in gold. The name of Sohr is a pseudonym, probably of the editor of the atlas, F. (Friedrich) Handtke. The famous geographer Heinrich Berghaus had made a minor contribution to the atlas back in 1847. Carl Flemming, publisher of the atlas, used this to mention Berghaus' name prominently on the atlas title page. Berghaus protested against this abuse of his name, but the atlas has kept its name of Sohr-Berghaus ever since. |

1872 was the first edition, although Lloyd's maps from this atlas, in different configurations, appear in the 1871 Warner and Beers Atlas of the State of Illinois, the 1872 Warner, Higgins and Beers Atlas of Whiteside Co. and the State of Illinois, the 1872 Walling and Gray Atlas of the State of Ohio, and the 1873 Martenet, Walling and Gray Atlas of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia (see our copies). We am sure that the maps also appear in numerous other county and state atlas by these and perhaps other publishers. Lloyd provided his maps to publishers to use in their atlases of counties and states, to give them an extra U.S. atlas at the back of their books. The maps are mostly on the same scale, indicating that they derive from a large wall map (see P11038). The configuration of the maps in the Handy Atlas is quite different from the other issues - especially unusual is the California and Nevada Map which has Arizona added at the bottom, turned ninety degrees. And in the Handy atlas, Lloyd adds maps of the rest of North America and the world. 93 +XXXV pages, Includes table of contents, flag and arms of the nations, statistical tables and index, maps in full color. Bound into brown cloth covered boards with "Handy Atlas" stamped in gilt. |
