Map of Concentration Camps in Soviet Russia

Note
Map shows the vast system of Soviet era forced labor camps in Russia. As noted by PJ Mode "This is the first appearance of a cold war map of Soviet concentration camps. It purports to show the various concentration camp systems, occupying fully half the territory of the Soviet Union. Text on the right of the map explains the organization of the camps and says that it was drawn from "original soviet documents and written statements from former prisoners." It explains that there are additional camps not shown on the map for want of adequate information. At the top of the map are photographs of "soviet documents from the camp authorities." Below the map are details about the particular industries and activities of individual camps and systems. The map was produced by "by two Polish military offıcers, Sylvester Mora and Pierre Zwierniak" in "one of the fırst books to bring in fırst hand accounts by prisoners and to feature some of the fırst attempts at quantifying slave labor." (Barney 2013, 346). The book was Sprawiedliwość Sowiecka, published in Rome in 1945, also published as La Justice Sovietique and Giustizia Sovietica. Mora and Zwierniak were pseudonyms for S. Starzewski and Kazimierz Zamorski (Applebaum 2003, 649.) At points in the text, the translation into English is rough." Note
Untitled folding detailed transportation map of Russia in Europe, dissected into 32 segments 23.5x13.5, and backed with linen. Including the mileage between town, also features the early stages of Russia’s railway system. With 6 Inset plans of St. Petersburg; Moscow; Riga, today in Latvia; Warsaw, today in Poland; Nizhniy Novgorod and map of Russia in Asia. The inset map depicts all of Asian Russia, from the Urals to Kamchatka, and delineates the main transcontinental road system which extended from Yekaterinburg, on the eastern slope of the Urals, all the way across to Okhotsk, on the Pacific, and then beyond to Kamchatka, showing precise mileage between stations along the transcontinental route throughout. Published by the St. Petersburg bookseller J.A. Jungmeister. While the map’s title is missing, Jungmeister’s name appears below the blank space where the title was intended to have been engraved, an imprint appears, in the upper left margin, noting that the map was printed in St. Petersburg on March 19, 1854.The map is one of the earliest maps to delineate all of the Russian Empire’s major roads in exacting detail, and as the legend explains on the right, the roads are classified into three categories: major post roads (highways); regional roads; and rural (dirt) roads. The map gives the precise mileage between the towns along each road, a detail very seldom seen on Russian road maps of the period. The coverage of roads, with mileage, even extends a ways into neighboring countries, also showing first major railway lines. Map depicts all of European Russia, extends onto Scandinavia, parts of Central Europe, Romania and the Caucuses. Showing oblasts (provinces), cities and towns. Map appears to be an unfinished proof state of an intended final publication. Most notably, a great blank space remains in the far upper left corner where the title was intended to have been placed.

One of the Earliest Telegraph Maps of Europe Extremely rare early map illustrating the progress of providing telegraph lines throughout Europe. This may be the earliest thematic map which focuses solely on telegraph lines across all of Europe. The map illustrates the telegraph lines then in operation, those under construction and the Telegraph Directorates and Bureaus. Among the more noteworthy connections are the cable across the English Channel, the Cable extending to Corsica and the proposed cable from Sardinia to North Africa. History of the Telegraph The first working telegraph was built by the English inventor Francis Ronalds in 1816 and used static electricity. Offering his invention to the Admiralty in July 1816, it was rejected as "wholly unnecessary". The telegraph invented by Baron Schilling von Canstatt in 1832 had a transmitting device which consisted of a keyboard with 16 black-and-white keys. Pavel Schilling subsequently improved its apparatus. The first commercial electrical telegraph was the Cooke and Wheatstone system. A demonstration four-needle system was installed on the Euston to Camden Town section of Robert Stephenson's London and Birmingham Railway in 1837 for signaling rope-hauling of locomotives. It was rejected in favor of pneumatic whistles. Cooke and Wheatstone had their first commercial success with a system installed on the Great Western Railway over the 13 miles from Paddington station to West Drayton in 1838. The Electric Telegraph Company, the world's first public telegraphy company was formed in 1845 by financier John Lewis Ricardo and Cooke. In 1851, a conference in Vienna of countries in the German-Austrian Telegraph Union adopted the Morse telegraph as the system for international communications. The code adopted was considerably modified from the original Morse code, and was based on a code used on Hamburg railways (Gerke, 1848). A common code was a necessary step to allow direct telegraph connection between countries. With different codes, additional operators were required to translate and retransmit the message. As well as the rapid expansion of the use of the telegraphs along the railways, they soon spread into the field of mass communication with the instruments being installed in post offices. Telegraph networks were expensive to build, but financing was readily available, especially from London bankers. By 1852, National systems were in operation in major countries The Bibliotheque National de France holds an 1855 edition, which shows a number of new telegraph lines, most notably one across the Black Sea and one from Moscow to Odessa. Crouch: "The Hull House maps were groundbreaking in both sociology and cartography, pioneering the method of mapping "social and demographic characteristics of a population within a geographical area" over time to initiate social change (Deegan). The maps document socioeconomic data from slum neighbourhoods in the midst of immigration into the United States. When impoverished Europeans fled to America in search of financial security, the rapid influx and lack of housing that awaited them led to atrocious conditions of decay and overcrowding in industrial centres. Hull House was set up to counter this trend. It was opened by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889, two social reformers and activists who decided to start the house after visiting a similar institution, Toynbee Hall, in Britain. Settlement houses were charity centres which aimed to alleviate poverty and encourage social diversity by housing middle class volunteers amongst working class recipients. Hull House acted as a residential facility as well as a community centre for newly arrived immigrants. A place where integration into American society was taught through various skills and language classes, Hull House illustrated the burgeoning social concerns circulating throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Hull House Maps and Papers project was led by Florence Kelley, a researcher and advocate who was particularly interested in social and working conditions. As well as the Hull House project, she also worked on the report of the smallpox epidemic in Chicago in 1893, and helped enforce the provisions of the Illinois Factory Inspection Law (she was the first female factory inspector in America). The team based at Hull House collected data by visiting and questioning the inhabitants of the neighbourhood, helped by four workers from the Bureau of Labor (the research was part of a wider project on slums commissioned by Congress in 1892). The book eventually produced was a collection of essays on topics ranging from labour unions to the function of art in the community. The highlights, however, were the maps, inspired by Charles Booth's poverty maps of London. There are two sets of maps covering the same four sections of Chicago: one showing the nationality of the inhabitants of each buildings, and one showing the weekly household income. The different nationalities and income bands are represented by different colours. The maps can be juxtaposed to show both the variety of people emigrating to America, and also how successful they were. Hull House then used these maps as the basis of discussion for future projects. For example, by comparing the first wage and nationality maps showing Halstead Street to Jefferson, it is clear that the strips of English-speaking people along De Koven and West 12th tended to earn in the highest income bracket, above 20 dollars per week, suggesting the importance of the language lessons offered by the House. The maps are also an important example of the growth in research work done by women in centres like Hull-House, while social science as a discipline was still forming in traditional academic institutions. They were "the single most important work by American women social scientists before 1900" (Kish Sklar)."

Note
"Entered according to Act of Congress, A.D. 1861 by Henry S. Graham." "Sold for the benefit of the sick and wounded soldiers of the U.S. Army." "Census Office, Department of the Interior, Washington, Sept. 9th, 1861. After a careful examination of the above very interesting map I am prepared to state that it not only furnishes the evidences of great care in its execution, but can be relied on as corresponding with the official returns of the 8th Census. [Signed in facsimile] Jos. C.G. Kennedy, Superintendent." Map indicates by gray patterns, the percentage of slaves in each county. "It should be observed, that several counties appear comparatively light. This arises from the preponderance of whites and free blacks in the large towns in those counties. . The figures in each county represent the percentage of slaves." "Scale of shade" printed in lower right corner. Includes population table based on census of 1860. Susan Schulten "The 1860 Census was the last time the federal government took a count of the South’s vast slave population. Several months later, the United States Coast Survey—arguably the most important scientific agency in the nation at the time—issued two maps of slavery that drew on the Census data, the first of Virginia and the second of Southern states as a whole. Though many Americans knew that dependence on slave labor varied throughout the South, these maps uniquely captured the complexity of the institution and struck a chord with a public hungry for information about the rebellion. The map uses what was then a new technique in statistical cartography: Each county not only displays its slave population numerically, but is shaded (the darker the shading, the higher the number of slaves) to visualize the concentration of slavery across the region. The counties along the Mississippi River and in coastal South Carolina are almost black, while Kentucky and the Appalachians are nearly white." .

Yaggy's large geographical charts are among the most beautiful and impressive educational charts published in the 19th century. Using chromolithography, Yaggy created stunning colors and contrasts in his images of the world, its regions, and peoples. The ten charts in this set were originally housed in a large wooden portfolio that also served as a display mechanism, allowing the charts to be tilted up for classroom use. In the portfolio were also two elaborate charts of the universe with moving parts and tinted gels. In 1887 Yaggy published a set of charts with a similar theme, "Geographical Study: Comprising Physical, Political, Geological and Astronomical Geography," although it did not include any of the chromolithographic charts in our 1893 set. Rather it had more conventional maps of the world and nations. Yaggy intended his charts to be used in classrooms by students, and issued a teacher’s handbook to assist with instruction. Yaggy published other educational works: Museum of Antiquity; A Description of Ancient Life… (1880); The Royal Path of Life; Or, Aims and Aids to Success and Happiness (1881); The Standard History of All Nations and Races… (1899); and How to Do a Consulting Library for Every Want (1902); Yaggy’s Anatomical Study; Presenting the Skeleton, Muscles, Arteries, Veins and Nerves, also Four Life-Size Manikins of the Body, the Head, the Eye and the Ear (Chicago, ca. 1884-1885), which featured life-size illustrations and cutaways of the human body.
