List No 2226.002
Note No publisher or date on title page - Brit. Mus. entry and Tooley, R.V. Dict. of mapmakers indicating Edinburgh, John Ainslie, and London, W. Faden. An unusual atlas of keyed outline maps for students, very elegantly drawn. It may be related to Faden's Geographical Exercises of 1777. The Brit. Mus. copy is dated 1782, with the maps dated 1st Jan. 1782, which is four years later than this copy. This atlas is dated by the maps, which each read "Published as the Act directs 1st July 1778." It would be interesting to know how the Museum knew that Ainslie and Faden published this. Young's Atlas, representing 23 outline hand colored maps of the continents, countries, kingdoms and empires, showing political and administrative divisions, some place names, rivers, lakes and mountains. Relief shown pictorially. Bound in quarter leather reddish marbled paper covered boards with the title on the spine reading "Young's Atlas."

Note In Latin and German. This book was Homann's second school atlas, published after his 1719 Atlas Methodicus (see our 4385.000). While the Atlas Methodicus seemed to be intended for the younger school child with its system of blank maps and indexes, this Atlas Scholasticus was clearly intended for the more advanced student with its use of the same maps as appeared in Homann's various editions of his atlases.

Highlights are 4 maps of the world (one in two sheets) and the 4-sheet map of America. Note Appears to be derived from the John Mitchell Map of the British and French Dominions in North America, 1757 - see our 2842.000. This issue of the Amerique Septentrionale map has the title date changed from 1755 to 1763 in manuscript, and the French possessions are reduced to the Louisiana Territory and islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which might indicate that it was manually updated to show the results of the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763. The map was first issued in 1755 and went through several states.

Author Wells, Edward, 1667-1727
Full Title (Title Page to) A new sett of maps both of antient and present geography : wherein not only the latitude and longitude of many places are corrected, according to the latest observations ; but also the most remarkable differences of antient and present geography may be quickly discern'd by a bare inspection or comparing of correspondent maps ; which seems to be the most natural and easy method to lead young students (for whose use the work is principally intended) unto a competent knowledge of the geographic science. Together with a geographical treatise particularly adapted to the use and design of these maps. By Edward Wells ... Imprimatur, Gu. Paynter Vice-Can. Oxon. London: Printed by T.W. for J. Walthoe, R. Wilkin, J. and J. Bonwicke, S. Birt, T. Ward and E. Wicksteed.
List No 11181.002
Note Atlas is complete with 41 double-page with table of contents "A catalogue of maps which compose this new sett ... " Maps are copper engraved by the Oxford engravers M. Burghers, R. Spofforth, Benjamin Cole and Sutton Nicholls. The atlas contains, in most cases, two of each map to compare the ancient and modern configurations. Showing boundaries, major cities and towns, rivers, mountains, churches and fortifications. Each map carries a dedication "To his Highness William Duke of Gloucester." The maps are highly decorative, with elaborate title cartouches surrounded by coats of arms, putti, or allegorical figures. The two world maps feature the island of California, a partially explored Australia, and numerous notations of parts as yet undiscovered. The Americas stand on their own, with a single map each for North America and South America, as well as one for the English Plantations in America. The map of North America also depicts the island of California and Florida encompasses the entire south. This edition is identical to the first edition of 1700 save the date on the title page. The Oxford scholar Wells produced these maps for the education of his young pupil William, Duke of Gloucester, the son of Queen Anne and George, Prince of Denmark. William suffered from encephalitis and died in 1700 at the age of eleven. Wells dedicated and published the atlas as a tribute to the Duke.
