Wood block print, pictorial map of the coast defense of Tokyo Bay. Kawaraban Broadside Map depicting arrival of Perry's "Black Ships," describing the arrival of the American Commodore Matthew Perry to Edo Bay (Tokyo Bay) in 1854 (Kaei 6), after his earlier brief visit in 1853. The defensive ships identified by the warlord in charge and his armorial crest are around the bay to intimidate the invaders. Includes notes describing the troops and list of names of Samurais in charge of defense of Tokyo Bay. Includes an illustration in the upper right depicting an American soldier. Perry's ships were the first major western intrusion into Japan. “Perry, on behalf of the U.S. government, forced Japan to enter into trade with the United States and demanded a treaty permitting trade and the opening of Japanese ports to U.S. merchant ships. This was the era when all Western powers were seeking to open new markets for their manufactured goods abroad, as well as new countries to supply raw materials for industry. It was clear that Commodore Perry could impose his demands by force. The Japanese had no navy with which to defend themselves, and thus they had to agree to the demands… Upon seeing Perry's fleet sailing into their harbor, the Japanese called them the "black ships of evil mien (appearance)." Many leaders wanted the foreigners expelled from the country, but in 1854 a treaty was signed between the United States and Japan which allowed trade at two ports. In 1858 another treaty was signed which opened more ports and designated cities in which foreigners could reside. The trade brought much foreign currency into Japan disrupting the Japanese monetary system. Because the ruling shogun seemed unable to do anything about the problems brought by the foreign trade, some samurai leaders began to demand a change in leadership. The weakness of the Tokugawa shogunate before the Western demand for trade, and the disruption this trade brought, eventually led to the downfall of the Shogunate and the creation of a new centralized government with the emperor as its symbolic head.” Source: Asia for Educators, Columbia University.

In 1964 Japanese artist Shoimi Mieko (Chieko) was invited to New York City by George Maciunas, founder of Fluxus network of artists to collaborate with him on a number of projects. This Fluxus map is the 1st. edition uncolored broadside issued in 1966, in 3 folds, with title on the cover "A fluxatlas. Mieko Shiomi. Event design, George Maciunas", now flattened. Includes outline maps of Japan, North America and Europe with notations indicating the locations of artists describing what they were doing at the time. In 1965 Shiomi conducted a series of nine events that she called "Spatial Poems" Each began with invitation to friends and colleagues to respond to a simple instruction, which took the form an intimate action poem, the accumulated responses she received constitute the work and give a glimpse of the network of artists who were connected through Fluxus activities. For Spatial Poem No. 2. Mieko contacted people around the world to record what they were doing and the direction they were facing in the morning Greenwich time on October 15, 1965.

This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce.

Broadside map in full color, portraits, historical sketch. Copyright is by H. Phelps, 1847. This was probably issued to appeal to the desire of recent immigrants from Ireland for information and images of the home country. Relief shown pictorially and by hachures.

Part of the Ornamental map type series. The map is surrounded by views of farmers and Indians, portrait of John Hancock in decorative cartouche is below the title, the Boston Tea Party is shown, seals of New England states in upper left corner, and the same whaling vignette is repeated five times. This is the "cheap" production for which this publisher is well known during the late 40's. The method of printing is hard to determine - it is either wood block, litho, or cerograph. Full color by county. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

Note
With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). Full color. Relief shown by hachures.

Map Of Chicago & North-Western Railway Lines (To) Dakota. (on verso) The Returns All In Better Than Ever This Year's Crop Reports From Along The Line Of The Chicago And North-Western Railway In Central And Southeastern Dakota ... Either Free Farms Or Cheap Farms Can now be had along or near the line of the Railroad ... Chas. N. Trivess, Printer, Chicago.

Note
A flamboyantly colored broadside promoting lands for sale along the projected Chicago & North-Western Railway line to Deadwood, Dakota. The date is estimated from the shown railway development, although the figures "D.78" appear on the left bottom, and that usually would indicate an 1878 date; however, none of the 1878 maps show the line developed as far as it is on the map. But 1878 may be the correct date, with the map showing the lines under construction - this would tie the broadside closer to the Black Hills gold rush of 1877 and explain the prominently shown Black Hills and the town of Deadwood on the map.
