Pub Note:
Latvijas statistikas atlass, by Margers Skujenieks. Published by Valsts Statistikā Pārvalde in Riga, Latvia, in 1938. Title translates to: Latvian statistical atlas. Bound in blue boards held together with metal hardware. With gilt title and the coat of arms for Latvia on front cover. Volume includes a title page, colophon, introduction, table of contents, 64 plates of a combined 43 maps and numerous diagrams, as well as explanatory text and a list of resources at the end. The text appears in parallel Latvian and French (with the exception of the colophon and introduction, which appear only in Latvian). A selection of the introduction translates to, "The Latvian state has existed for twenty years. This span of time is large enough to look back and see what has been done and what has been achieved … Even a casual observer can easily see the huge difference between Latvia in 1918 and 1938. Of all the European countries, Latvia is the one that has suffered the most in the world war, revolution and chance for freedom. Of all European nations, the Latvian nation is the one that bore the heaviest sacrifices during the war. When independent Latvia was founded in 1918, our land was devastated, looted, abandoned by the inhabitants and extremely poor. For years, millions of foreign soldiers had walked our once relatively wealthy land. For years, the battle line of hostile powers was located in the heart of Latvia near the banks of the Daugava.” The maps and diagrams illustrate the growth of Latvia over time. Topics include political geography, climate, history from 1200 to 1795, population, ethnicity, education, literacy, public health, employment, agriculture, industry, transportation, communication and economics. The atlas employs striking data visualization to convey a vast amount of statistical information through pictorial means.
