Pub Note:
Atlas juvenilis, eller geographiska chartor till ungdomens tienst i methodisk ordning författade, by Anders Åkerman (1721 or 1723–1778). Published by the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1789. While the date on the spine is 1788, the map of Sweden within the atlas is dated 1789. Oblong octavo. Bound in board covered in marbled paper, with leather spine and gilt spine title. Title translates to: Atlas juvenilis, or geographical charts for the service of youth in a methodical order. Volume is comprised of an engraved title page and table of contents, as well as 30 engraved, hand-colored maps. The maps provide worldwide geographic coverage, including a world map presented as Western and Eastern Hemispheres, as well as maps of the continents and certain countries, such as Sweden, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Egypt and Palestine. Maps show political boundaries, cities, topography, deserts, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines, and islands. Relief is shown pictorially. Some of the maps are accompanied by annotated text, in ink. The atlas was first published in 1768 under the same name, and it was issued in several various editions until 1815. It proved to be an enduring model for future Swedish didactic cartography. After Åkerman died in 1778 it was published by Daniel Djurberg and perhaps others. The atlas was renamed Geographisk Handatlas, most likely in the 1820s, and issued under that name by Erik Åkerlund (1754-1832) in an unknown number of editions. See Pub List No 14539.000 in this collection for an edition from 1835. Historical notes from Barry Lawrence Ruderman.
