Pub Note:
"A very rare single-sheet print published by Monath (only two copies in the IKAR archive), depicting the events of the successful siege of Belgrade from June to August 1717 by Prince Eugene. This copy appears to be in its first state, still lacking the engraver’s and publisher’s signatures. The main map shows the surroundings of Belgrade with the imperial and Ottoman positions, including the fortress of Petrovaradin to the east. The troop movements are depicted day by day. In the upper right, there is an inset map of the Turkish relief army approaching the imperial besiegers, while in the lower left, another inset map illustrates the decisive attack by Prince Eugene’s troops on the Ottoman camp during the night of August 16. The key to success was not only this night attack but also the mortar strike on August 14, which hit the fortress’s main gunpowder magazine. As a result, nearly 3,000 Ottoman defenders died in an instant. On the left, there is a detailed legend." (Clemens Paulusch, 2025)
