Carta Topografica dei Ducati di Parma, Piacenza e Guastalla levata dietro misure trigonometriche negli anni 1821-1822 sotto il Governo di Sua Maestà L'Arciduchessa Maria Luigia
Pub Note:
": Topographical map of the Duchies of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla carried out under the government of Her Majesty the Archduchess Maria Luigia and drawn and engraved in Milan in the Military Geographical Institute of the I.R. Austrian General Staff. The title is shown in the upper left corner, in a free field, and is enriched by allegorical representations of the river Po', which rests its foot on a rich cornucopia, the Taro and the Trebbia. Behind the latter are the depictions of the two respective bridges, important monumental works, which were built during the government of Maria Luigia. This mural map, made up of nine sheets (440x680 mm each), represents the first work of "modern" cartography built by locating places according to their distances from the sundial and perpendicular from a main point, which in this particular case is the dome of the Cathedral of Milan, while the geodetic positions of the points were determined by means of a particular triangulation linked to that of Northern Italy. Along the left side is a list with the names of the places and their respective "Distances from the sundial/Perpendicular of Milan in Vienna tense". In the lower left corner, always in a free field, there is an explanation of the signs which shows the profound attention to every detail. The Ruins, Chapels, Images and Crosses, Oil Sources, Iron and Copper Mines, Salt Springs and Mineral Water Baths are marked in addition to the canonical conventional signs relating to the different types of inhabited centres, the Roads with the Post Offices, the borders and much more. In the upper right-hand corner, information relating to the topography of the territory is reported: Geographical position and borders, Climate, Surface, Soil, Rivers and Streams and finally Mineral Products. Along the right-hand side, news regarding the Population and Public Institutions as well as some news regarding Industry and Commerce are reported. Finally, in the lower corner some historical notes are summarized, divided into political and military events. The work is also enriched by the topographical representation of the Ducal Villa and Park of Colorno and of the Ducal Villa of Sala called Casino dei Boschi. This work, executed at the scale of 1/86400 of the natural, must be counted among the monumental works executed during the Government of Maria Luigia, as careful management of the territory could not, and still today, cannot disregard a detailed and precise cartographic representation of its territory. The paper is applied on canvas in detachments and kept in its original case" (Francesco Trippini, 2023)
