Pub Note:
First sheet published of 182 sheets. Compare to the 1790 reduced map. The Cassinis initiated the Survey of France, the first precise national survey. It influenced the Ordnance Survey in Britain. NMM 222,223 - the map published in atlas form in 1789, by Jacques-Dominique, his son, after he died in 1784. See Brown, Story of Maps, pp254-255, Wilford, pp111-127. Lister says the project was completed in 1818.
