This is actually the second edition of this atlas as seen by sheet III which is a later issue (see our 15994.000, for the first edition). This atlas is composed of 23 nautical charts engraved on double sheet, signed by Giuseppe Guerra, preceded by a magnificent allegorical title page with the title inscribed on a marble stone surmounted by the Bourbon coat of arms, at whose feet sit Neptune and Thetis; among them a couple of putti leaning against a globe and nautical instruments; in the background the sea crossed by a sailing ship. Beautiful coeval half leather binding with gilt fillets and titles on the spine. Very fresh and marginal specimen. Splendid maritime atlas, very rare, printed between 1785 and 1792, not completed as the mapping of the coasts of Sicily was never completed. The first table, which repeats the title described above, bears the date of 1785. "The project of a nautical chart of the Kingdom of Naples was was delayed such that Guerra was later chosen as the engraver of all of Rizzi Zannoni's cartographic production. We recall that Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni (Padua, 1736 - Naples, 1814), topographer and astronomer engineer, initially worked for the Prussian army; taken prisoner at Rossbach in 1757, he was transferred to Paris where he continued to work as a geographer for the French court; he then went to America to help determine Canada's borders. Finally transferred to the court of Naples for the interest of Galiani, he contributed to bringing the Neapolitan cartographic production to a European level with his exemplary works."
