Pub Note:
Tableaux d'arithmétique linéaire, du commerce, des finances, et de la dette nationale de l'Angleterre, by William Playfair, published in Paris, 1789. Title translates to: Linear arithmetic, trade, finance, and national debt tables of England. Bound in board decorated with marbled paper. Leather spine and corners. Gilded spine title and floral decorations. In quarto: xv, [1], 2-87, [88], 12 (1-9, X, XI, 12) leaves of plates containing 13 charts. Includes a dedication, preface, essay and descriptive text for each chart. Charts use data visualization to illustrate the economy of England, including international trade, military expenses, and national debt. Hand-colored lithographs by Playfair and Pillot, with exquisite graphic design, communicating complex information at a glance. Playfair (1759–1823) pioneered the presentation of quantitative information by visual means. He invented the time series graph or line chart, the bar chart, and the pie chart, beginning in 1786. “Over the course of the next half century, Playfair’s line graph, which counterposed two quantitative axes, (one for time, the other for economic measures such as exports, imports and debts) became on of the most recognizable chronographic forms.“ (Rosenberg & Grafton, Cartographies of Time (2010) pp. 136).
