Pub Note:
"Map of Ukraine of the greatest rarity, made by Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan to illustrate his even rarer Description d'Ukranie, published in Rouen by Jacques Cailloue in 1660. It is oriented with north at the bottom, and decorated with three cartouches, including one for the title illustrated with 5 people and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Poland. A French-Polish cartographer, engineer and architect, Beauplan served as an artillery captain for the army of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1637, he was sent to Ukraine, and created in 1639, the first "descriptive" map of Ukraine, of which a first version in one sheet was engraved in 1648, and a second version in 9 sheets in 1650, under the title Delineatio specialis et accurata Ukrainae. He then wrote his Description des contrés du Royaume de Pologne, which was published in 1651, and was renamed Description d'Ukranie, when the second edition was released in 1651. Two more editions were published in 1660 and 1861. This book was the first published that provided a geographical, economic, and demographic description of Ukraine. The edition of 1660 was the first illustrated with the map Carte d'Ukranie. An earlier version of the Carte d'Ukranie was published in 1648 with a different title, Delineatio Generalis Camporum Desertorum vulgo Ukraina. Maps of Ukraine alone being extremely rare, we could not find any single copy of this Rouen 1660 edition in public collections, nor any record in past auctions. Furthermore, in 2008, the Ukrainian Museum of New York organized an exhibition called The Mapping of Ukraine: European Cartography and Maps of Early Modern Ukraine, 1550-1799, and this map was also absent from the collection. After the Rouen edition of Jacques Cailloue in 1660, there were two other editions of this map published with the imprint of Jollain in Paris, including one with no date and one dated 1686. The BnF owns the two Jollain editions, but no copy of this earlier edition of 1660 published by Jacques Cailloue in Rouen. We found another variant of this map with Crimea at the James Ford Bell Library." (Librairie Le Bail, 2020)
