Pub Note:
Aerial view and map of the German invasion of South East England, dated from 1.9.1940-20.11.1940. 117 sheets of oblique imagery and maps joined to form 4 series, each folded 35 x 30. Sheets comprise a series maps with an aerial view of the area at the bottom of each one. Each series includes index map "Ubersicht" and Legend "Zeichenerklarung". Maps are in black and white with symbols printed in red, showing place names, footprint of buildings, roads, railroads, airports, etc. These booklets of maps were found in October, 1945, by an American serviceman in Berlin's Tempelhof Airport where they were being used as table cloths in the dining room. They originally were intended for use by German pilots and navigators during the Battle of Britain, with this group covering a chief entrance to English airspace roughly between Portsmouth and Margate. The bottom half of each page contains an isometric aerial photograph of a section of coast as it appeared on the approach from France, above that is a corresponding black and red map indicating coastal defenses and other important topographical features.
