Pub Note:
"Extraordinarily rare map of Istanbul, commissioned by the modernizer of the Ottoman Empire Sultan Mahmud II. The map shows the region surrounding Istanbul, as well as the city itself, with a title vignette in the upper right corner, in Turkish; it also incorporates two inset views on the left corner. The map is based upon that of Graf Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke (1800 – 1891), a German soldier, Field Marshall, and Chief of Staff of the Prussian Army for thirty years; in 1835 he visited Istanbul, where he met Sultan Mahmud II: what was supposed to be a short stay, brought as result a commission from the Sultan to aid in the modernization of the Ottoman Empire´s army. The duration of his stay was stretched to 2 years, surveying the city, the Bosphorus, the Dardanelles, and the surrounding area, learning Turkish, and getting acquainted with the region. Back home, he published a few works on his time spent in Turkey. The map has all characters in Turkish, definitely addressed to the local market, and was printed by the Mekteb-i fünun-i harbiyye, created in the 1840´s." Sebastian Hidalgo Sola.
