Volume 1 is 217 pages, includes advertisements, introduction, table of contents and descriptive text, some with engraved views of battlegrounds. Volume 2 contains 24 uncolored folded maps and topographical plans, some with overlap, engraved by the Chevalier de Beaurain. Bound in marbled brown paper boards. Of special interest is the use of paper flaps on several of the maps to show the changes over time of various battles. These may be some of the earliest maps to utilize this method.

A few copies published with the name of the author on title page, but he was discontented with the parts censored, so he issued the rest under the name off De Beaurain as noted: "Mr. de Grimoard was so displeased with the considerable mutilation of the text from censorship that he did not let his name stand except for a few copies distributed to friends, for the others Beaurain set himself up as the author, even though he only engraved the maps and plans. Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771), was a French Geographer and Royal Geographer to King Louis XV. He published a 14-volume atlas (Atlas de geographie ancienne et moderne.) and "Description topographique militaire de la Flandre, ou Campagnes du marechal de Luxembourg" (1690-1694), Paris, 1756.
