This is the earliest separate map of Sonoma County listed by Vogdes (he does not list the first edition, but does list an 1882 edition). With eleven inset maps of towns, a table of distances, a view of the rocky coastline, and an advertisement for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. The following note appears printed on the map: "...impatience has been manifested on account of the delayed completion of this map. It was started thirteen years ago when the author was penniless and in debt. It has cost him $18,000 cash and five years labor. In the meantime he has paid $21,300 of old liabilities, much of which had ceased to bear a legal value. He has found the cash question a sufficient cause for delay. Those who strive to please the public seldom succeed. In the management of his own business the author has tried to please himself. He hopes the MAP will please all." The map is, in fact, a beautiful production. Full color by township or school district. Without rollers.
