Context: Bishop Clermont and Senlis, Grand Almoner of France, La rochefoucauld (1558-1645) was appointed cardinal in 1607. It was primarily due to his insistence that Henry IV was converted to Catholicism before his coronation. The cardinal also served as French Ambassador to the pope and so protected the ancient rights of the king and the Gallican church against encroachment by Rome.
