Credit Line: The Art Institute of Chicago, Bequest of Bryan Lathrop
Subject Description: Young woman in diaphanous gown and cap, seen from behind and holding gown in left hand
Context: Little primary evidence remains to date this image. It seems probable it was drawn in fall of 1893 on a lithographic stone obtained in Paris, and then set aside with other similar images. Whistler could have approached Belfond before their relationship ended in November 1893, or have gone to the Lemercier shop.
