Context: Fearing a prophecy that a future grandson would kill him, the king of Argos imprisoned his daughter Danae in a tower. The god Zeus fell in love with her and appeared to her as a shower of gold. From this union, the hero Perseus was born.The idea of love and its many manifestations, especially in mythology, fascinated 17th-century audiences. In Orazio's version of the popular myth, the shower consists of a gold ribbon and coins that bear Zeus's thunder bolt.
